Late Shri Shankarrao Chavan 3rd State Level Elocution Competition

The College strives for education and development of the Students from backward areas as well it attempts to afford them a platform to develop their skills. To achieve this College organizes State Level Competition every Year. This was the mission of Our Founder President Shri Shankarrao Chavan and hence we accolade this Competition to him. Hence the Competition is also named behind him “ Late Shankarrao Chavan State Level Elocution Competition.”
We have assorted Luminaries who visited Our College to inaugurate this auspicious and qualitative event. Hon’ble Mr. Justice S.B Mhase, Judge, Bombay High Court was the one who inaugurated the Late Shankarrao Chavan 1st State Level Elocution Competition. Our second effort was Hon’ble Justice Vijaya Tahilramani, Judge Bombay High Court, to inaugurate the subsequent year’s Competition. This Year College organized the Competition on 5th February 2011 and invited Hon’ble Adv. Uday Warunjikar, Member Bar Council of Maharashtra & Goa as a Chief Guest.
Participants across the State of Maharashtra actively participated in the competition and generated new ideas on the topics. Prof. Ms. Aruna Sampath, Prof. Ms. Anurekha Chari and Prof. Ms. Bhakti Desai judged the competition on the topics of “60 years of working of the Indian Constitution, Vision 2020-Technology for all, Food for None, Anti- Superstition Bill-A Time-barred Action, and Sting Operations: An Intrusion in Right to Privacy?”
The following Students bagged the prizes:
- Ms. Parvathy Tharamel - ILS Law COllege, Pune 1st Prize winner (Trophy and cash Prize of Rs. 5,000).
- Mr. Sherlin Panag - Symbiosis Law College, Pune, 1st Runner - Up (Trophy and cash Prize of Rs. 3,000).
Ms. Pracheeti Deshpande – D.E.S Law College, Pune, 1st Runner - Up (Trophy and cash Prize of Rs. 3,000).
- Mr. Vinod Palreja – G.J.Adwani Law College, Mumbai - 2nd Runner -Up (Trophy and cash Prize of Rs. 2,000).
Legal Aid Camp
“We can't help everyone, but everyone can help someone”.
While imparting legal education, College is aware of the social responsibilities which it owes to the Society. It is with this object, the College has established its own “free legal aid cell” in 2005, to provide free legal aid to the poor, needy and disadvantaged sections of the Society. Cell has succeeded in achieving its goal by active participation of legal practitioners, faculties and most important its Students. College frequently organizes free legal aid camps in the rural areas of Pune District in Association with the “Pune district authority”, district & sessions Court, Pune.
In the series of these camps the latest camp was organized on 16th February, 2011 at “Mandavgaon –Pharata” Tal. Shirur, Dist. Pune. Camp was attended by around 60 students of the College, ull-time faculties and leading legal practitioners. Shri. N.U.Parma, Joint Civil Judge (Jr. Division), Ghodnadi Court, Shirur presided over in the inauguration session as a Chief Guest. He explained the concept of Legal Services Authority and its necessity to the villagers. He discussed the Legal Service Authority Act, 1987 in nutshell.
Inaugural session was then followed by the lectures session wherein leading lawyers delivered the lectures on the current social significant topics. Adv. R.V.Jadhav, Adv.D .Y.Kamble and Adv.S.G.Shendge in their lectures stressed upon “ An Introduction to Maharashtra Land Revenue Code, Rights of maintenance and Rights of the Shareholders in Co-operative Society” respectively.
College students imparted the legal education through skits on “ Women and Children Rights and Right to education, Rights of contract Labours and Consumer Rights” respectively. Whole education programme was followed by free legal aid to the villagers by legal practitioners, faculties and students.
Blood Donation Camp.
“There is no donation that is as big as donating a part of yourself”.
Our College is not only engaged in the noble cause of providing Education to the Poor but is consistent with its motto of “Yethe bahutanche heet.” The college organized the blood donation camp on 26th February 2011. This event is organized every year by the College on the Occasion of Death anniversary of Late Shri Shankarrao Chavan, Former Home Minister of Government of India and the Founder President of Our Institution. This venture is to set in motion the Principles laid by Late Shri Shankarrao Chavan which is to ensure the safety and well being of the people.. As per every year the college succeeded in hoarding number of bottles of Blood which were donated to different Blood Banks to foster hundreds of families with joy. Students and Staff from all age groups assembled to donate their blood for the noble cause.
GUEST LECTURES:
“The Constitution does not grant rights, it recognizes them” –Justice Bhushan Gawai.
Justice Bhushan Gawai was an Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor in the High Court of Judicature at Bombay, Nagpur Bench. He was then appointed as Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor for Nagpur Bench. And in 2003 was elevated as Additional Judge of the High Court. The College organized a guest lecture of Justice Bhushan Gawai, Judge Bombay High Court, Mumbai. His topic was “Ideas of Justice in Indian Constitution”. He started with the Basic Structure feature and concluded with the recent trends which truly enriched the knowledge of the Students. He also unveiled various significant case laws which materialized the Indian Constitution.
“Vehicle of Nation’s Progress has met with Roadblocks.”–Justice Abhay Oka
Justice Abhay Oka is a Judge, Bombay High Court, Mumbai. He was directly elevated from practice as an Additional Judge, Bombay High Court, Mumbai. Justice Abhay Oka visited College to deliver a lecture on the topic “60 years of working of Indian Constitution.” Justice Oka reviewed the Constitution in today’s context with special reference to Right to Life and liberty, Right to Equality and Right to Freedoms. He analysed the importance of Freedom and Liberty and compared it with the recent struggle for these rights in Egypt and Afghanistan on one side and China on the other He referred many leading case laws to justify his views.
“Nuclear Power Plant gives Power only to the titled”- Justice B.G.Kolse-Patil.
Justice Kolse-Patil is Former Judge of Bombay High Court. He is a prominent Social activist who resigned from his post as a Judge for the sake of needy and poor at the peak of his career. His noteworthy activity is fight against Jaitapur Power Plant. Justice B.G.Kolse-Patil paid a visit to our College to justify the importance of environment and its sustainability. While exploring this area he furnished an example of Jaitapur Power Plant Project and estimated its hazardous effects on the environment and nature. He also acquainted the Students with various other modes of energy productions which maintain the sustainability of ecology.
“I would rather die on my feet than live on my knees”- Subhash Ware.
On the Occasion of world Human Rights Day College organized a guest lecture of Shri Subhash Ware, a socialist. Subhash Ware is a Social activist, who has participated in various Human Right activities. The most remarkable work which can be mentioned here is ………. In his lecture Subhash Ware made Students visualize various instances where we trample the human rights of others innocently. He also talked about how Indian Constitution is the weapon to fight against violation of our human rights. Further in his lecture he advised Students to use their own freedom to protect others.
“Anybody can make history; only a great man can write it”-Prof. L.B.Verma.
As integrated course of Law( Five Year Law Course) also deals with Social Science subject, College made its efforts to make Students know why do need to learn History. In this attempt College organized a lecture on “What is History?” This lecture was delivered by renowned Historian and Author Prof.L.B.Verma. Prof L.BVerma is an author of various books on History. He is a senior academician in Banaras Hindu University, Banaras. The Lecture was spilled over the significance of History and the objects of Studying History by the Law Students.
“PPacta sunt servanda” and its Practical approach”- Prof. Nilima Bhadbhade.
Prof Nilima Bhadbhade is a Faculty in ILS Law College, Pune. She is distinguished academician as well. She is in academics for last 15years. She visited the college to deliver a lecture on “practical aspects of Law of Contract.” She explored the practical difficulties while practicing Law of Contract. The Lecture was thoroughly exemplary.
“Interpreting Revenue Records is the most indispensable step for a lawyer”- Adv. Vilas Atre.
Adv. Vilas Atre is a Senior Advocate practicing at Civil Side in Shivaji Nagar District Court, Pune. He is a renowned lawyer in the matters of Land Laws and all Property matters. He was a teaching faculty in ILS Law College, Pune. He conducted a lecture on “Revenue Records and 7/12 Extract.” In this Lecture Advocate Atre focused on how to read 7/12 extract and how to interprete the same. He also explained the importance of the document because of which many property owners go propertyless. While explaining the importance he elaborated kinds of lands and their valuation with their mutation entries.

B.E.Avhad is a Senior Advocate and Former Member Bar Council of Maharashtra & Goa. He is being practicing law for more than 25 years. He also is an excellent Academician. He visited the College to deliver a lecture on Law of Evidence. He focused almost on every important aspect of Evidence as Primary & Secondary Evidence, Impact of E-Evidence, Dying Declaration etc… he also guided Students with different skills of Advocacy
Friday, 22nd January, 2010: Marathwada Mitra Mandal’s Shankarrao Chavan Law College organized a Guest Lecture on Cyber Crimes on 22nd January, 2010. The Guests were Mr. Sanjay Jadhav, Deputy Commissioner of Police & State Intelligence, Pune and Adv Anand Deshpande, Certified Ethical Hacker & Cyber Crime Investigator.
Mr. Sanjay Jadhav addressed the students and said that Cyber Crime is more of a psychological Crime rather than a Technical Crime. He emphasized that Cyber crime is the most vulnerable crime for many reasons viz. its a machine to machine crime, where anonymity of the offender is not revealed, It is a borderless crime, it involves high damaging effect, Physical presence of offender is not required etc. His wide experience could be seen as he elucidated many day to day examples and cases. He made the students stick to their seats by his tremendous articulacy he possessed.
Adv Deshpande spelled out many technical aspects of an ethical hacking. He advised the students that high level of confidentiality and privacy should be maintained on social networking websites like Orkut, Linkden and Facebook. He effectively communicated with the student whereby the student interest was maintained and it could be seen from the wide response and interaction of the Students.
Dr Baba Adhav embarked upon the role of great Social Reformers like Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar in the upliftment of downtrodden classes. He believes in the ideology of “Live & Let live”. His Lecture depicted the transition of society from age old traditions to the present day values and focused on the need that law shall not remain only on paper, but be brought to life by the common efforts of all. He pressed the students that bringing human rights to reality is the moral, social and ethical responsibility of all and especially the lawyers.
Saturday, 16th January, 2010: Marathwada Mitra Mandal’s Shankarrao Chavan Law College organized Late Shri Shankarrao Chavan Memorial Second State Level Elocution Competition. It was organized in the fond memory of Late Shri Shankarrao Chavan, Founder President of Marathwada Mitra Mandal.
On this occasion, Hon’ble Mrs. Justice Tahilramani, Judge Bombay High inaugurated the Competition and addressed the students on importance of eloquence skills in a Lawyer.
Prin B.G Jadhav, Treasurer, Marathwada Mitra Mandal delivered the Welcome Address. Mr. Nitish Nawsagaray, Principal, Shankarrao Chavan Law College, Pune elucidated the theme of the Competition.
Prof (Dr) A Lakshminath, Vice Chancellor, Chanakya National Law University, Patna, Chancellor, Andhra University & Prof (Dr) T S N Sastri, Head, Department of Law, University of Pune were present for the Valedictory Session.
The Panel Judges were Dr (Mrs). Durgambini Patel, Reader, Deptt of Law, University of Pune, Mrs Neeta Bokil, Faculty, H V Desai College of Arts, Science & Commerce, Pune and Ms Amrapali Aurangabadkar, Faculty, Siddhivinayak College of Arts & Commerce. The following Students bagged the prizes:

Sunday, 10th January, 2010: Marathwada Mitra Mandal’s Shankarrao Chavan Law College, Pune in collaboration with Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Samata Pratishthan organized a one day Seminar on Muslim Women and their Right to Maintenance. The seminar was in Marathi language. Hon’ble Mr. R.V. Deshmukh, Judge, Family Court, Pune and Mr. Sayyed Bhai, Chairman, Muslim Satyashodhak Mandal inaugurated the Session.
Dr (Mrs.) Vaijayanti Joshi, Principal, ILS Law College and Dr (Mrs.) Jaya Sagade, Vice-Principal, ILS Law College were the Key Speakers. They depicted the journey form Shah Bano Begum’s Case to the recent Shabana Bano v. Imran Khan’s case.
Adv. Zakir Attar, Adv Sharada Wadekar, Prof. Shamsuddin Tamboli had an open discussion on the Muslim Women’s Protection Act and her right to maintenance under sec 125 of Cr.P C.
Dr. Baba Adhav, President, Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Samata Pratishthan, Pune also addressed the Gathering and shared his personal experiences.
Saturday, 9th January,2010: The College organized a Guest Lecture on “Employment opportunities in United Nations” The Speaker was Mr. Muhammad Syed Gilani. He effectively communicated with the students about career and Job opportunities in United Nations Organization.
Friday, 8th January, 2010: The College had arranged an Orientation on Fluency in English Speaking & Public Speaking by Mr. Anthony Thomas. Students were guided as to how they could acquire command over English Language and improve upon their communication skills.
Thursday, 10th Dec 2009: Marathwada Mitra Mandal’s Shankarrao Chavan Law College celebrated World Human Rights Day on 10th Dec 2009. On this occasion, Dr Baba Adhav, President, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Samata Pratishthan, Pune addressed the students on the Topic of “Indian Social Structure & Human rights”.
Dr Baba Adhav embarked upon the role of great Social Reformers like Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar in the upliftment of downtrodden classes. He believes in the ideology of “Live & Let live”. His Lecture depicted the transition of society from age old traditions to the present day values and focused on the need that law shall not remain only on paper, but be brought to life by the common efforts of all. He pressed the students that bringing human rights to reality is the moral, social and ethical responsibility of all and especially the lawyers.
Events of the year 2009-2010:
1. August 1, 2009: Adv P Narayan, Senior Advocate, District Court, Shivaji Nagar, Pune delivered a Guest Lecture on "Law of Arbitration & Conciliation". His Mastery, vast experience and practice in the subject helped the students to understand the intricacies of Law of Arbitration.
2. September 23, 2009: Adv K.M Irani, Senior Advocate, who is considered as an authority on “Law of Evidence”shared his words of wisdom and explores in his own unique style the vast ambit of "Dying Declaration".

Apart from the traditional teaching, our College is aware that it is not only theoretical aspect that is important but one also has to be aware of its pragmatic aspect also. Taking care of this we timely arrange for some scholarly guest lectures by eminent personalities who share their practical experiences with our students.
1. What a way to begin! : Hon'ble Justice Smt. Ranjana Desai, Senior Judge, Bombay High Court inaugurated the Academic Session 2008-09 of Marathwada Mitra Mandal’s Shankarrao Chavan Law College on 26th July 2008. Her ladyship enlightened the students on "Role of Accomplice in Criminal Trial."
2. Secularism, bedrock of Indian Legal System: Dr. Ashgar Ali Engineer, a Renowned Islamic Scholar delivered a lecture on "Secularism" on 29th July 2008. It was an interactive session where emphasis was given on the exchange of ideas between the Students and the Guest.
3. Judges are not constrained by the letters of law: Marathwada Mitramandal's Shankarrao Chavan Law College organized a colloquium on "Judicial Activism And Judicial Accountability" 2nd August 2008.The colloquium was chaired by Hon. Justice P.B.Sawant, (Former Judge,
letter & spirit Marathwada Mitra Mandal’s Shankarrao Chavan Law College, Pune celebrated this day by organizing an interactive seminar on “Future of Human Rights in India” followed by a street play.
Dr. (Mrs.) Razia Patel, Social Activist and Adv. Aseem Sarode, Founder of Human Rights Law Defenders were present for the seminar. They shared their experiences about human rights perspectives and how the faith in fundamental human rights is to be re-affirmed.
4. No State can lead a life in isolation: Mr. Dnyaneshwar Mulay, Foreign Service Adviser to Govt. of India delivered a lecture on “Globalisation: Law is not an Ass”13th August, 2008. Students were enriched by the knowledge he shared and his experiences as a Foreign Service Advisor. He embarked upon the significance of International Law in the contemporary world.
5. "Humanity has the stars in its future, and that future is too important to be lost under the burden of juvenile folly and ignorant superstition" :On 7th February, 2009 Marathwada Mitra Mandal’s Shankarrao Chavan Law College, Pune organized a guest lecture on Juvenile Justice - From "Welfare to Rights". Hon’ble Mr. Mushtaque Hussain Shaikh, Joint Civil Judge (JD), JMFC & Principal Magistrate Juvenile Justice Board, Akola was the guest speaker. He pin pointed the provisions of Juvenile Justice Act and also depicted the short comings of the working of the Juvenile Welfare Board.
6. "Inherent, Inalienable Rights": 10th December is celebrated as World Human Right Day. It was on this day United Nations Organisation recognized the existence of Human Rights through enactment of Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948 and declared universally all human beings are born free and equal in dignity & rights. 7. Educational Opportunities Overseas: Prof. Sathyanarayanan, delivered a lecture on 29th January 2009 on the ”Educational Opportunities overseas". He guided the students aspiring to pursue their masters' education abroad. He was successful in quietening the restless minds of students about the 'Ifs’' and 'buts' of chasing their dreams of seeking education abroad.
8. On 31st January 2009, Mr. Ahmer conducted a workshop on Placement and Communication skills for the final year students. This was quite useful to them as it was an effort to brace them about the skills they require to possess while facing interviews.
9. A Tribute to the Pioneer: One of the essential qualities which a Lawyer must possess is the art of eloquence. Following this, on 21st February 2009, PROSPECTUS 09-10 we organized the First Late Shri Shankarrao Chavan Memorial State Level Elocution Competition. This was in the fond memory of Late Shri Shankaraoji Chavan, Founder President of Marathwada Mitra Mandal, Pune who was an outstanding parliamentarian, an able administrator. The object was to inculcate in the budding lawyers an art of eloquence.
25 Colleges from all over Maharashtra participated in the said Competition. Hon’ble Mr Justice S.B. Mhase Patil, Judge Bombay High Court inaugurated the Session. Adv (Dr) S R Bhosale, Dean Faculty of Law also graced the Session along with Prin. B.G Jadhav, Treasurer, Marathwada Mitra Mandal. Mr Pandit Vidyasagar, Director, BCUD, University of Pune and Adv Ranjan Nehru , Corporate Legal Consultant,Nehru & Co.
10. "Into the darkness they go the wise and the lovely": On 26th February 2009, we had the privilege of having with us Mr. Bhai Vaidya, the President of Rashtra Seva Dal and ex-Home Minister of Maharashtra on the eve of 5th Death Anniversary of Late Shankarrao Chavan, Former Home Minister of India. He shared his experiences with Late Shri Shankarrao Chavan with the audience. His lecture led emphasis on various facets of Shankarrao Chavan's Social & Political life.
The programme was followed by Blood Donation Camp. Students & Staff of the Marathwada Mitra Mandal donated more than 70 bottles of blood to Acharya Anandrishiji Blood Bank.
